The current tiger reserve was once ruled by the Gondwana dynasty, a tribal empire that controlled regions of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra in central India during the 18th century. Until 1879, the Banjara community and the valley inhabitants of Gondwana preserved this area purely as a forest. Later, in 1933, it was declared a wildlife sanctuary and reserve forest. The site officially received National Park status on June 1, 1955. Subsequently, Kanha National Park was designated as a tiger reserve in 1973. In 1973, the Indian government launched a tiger protection project primarily aimed at conserving the Bengal tiger population. As a result, the Indian government included nine national parks in this Bengal tiger conservation project, with Kanha National Park ranking at the very top due to its high population of Bengal tigers. That’s a main reason tourists come here to see a Royal Bengal tiger or also a Bara Singha (swamp deer), but it depends on our luck whether we see tigers or not, but when we take proper preparation to visit here, that makes a simple or better experience in Kanha National Park.

Safaris can be booked online from the portal of the Madhya Pradesh Forest Department. Many resorts also offer safari bookings along with the accommodation reservations. It is always wise to make bookings in advance, especially during peak seasons, to get safari slots as per your preferences. It is very difficult to choose your favorite safari, gate, or zone at the last minute. Whatever is available at the last minute, we have to ask for the same.
